'They told me to lose weight': Heidi Klum on how she stood up to her critics as a young model

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Natural curves: Heidi Klum refused to bow to pressure to lose weight, making her breakthrough when she modelled for Victoria's Secret in the late 1990s

Supermodel Heidi Klum has revealed how as a young model she refused to bow to pressure to lose her famous curves or cut her hair.

The 37-year-old German beauty instead stuck to her guns, sensing that her natural figure would win out in the end.

'People were trying to squeeze me into boxes saying 'Oh, you're too happy, maybe we'll cut your hair really short, maybe you'll lose some weight to be thinner',' she told Access Hollywood.

'And I was like no, my hair is the way it is and my body is fine and I would just go with what I believed in.'

Klum, who is married to British singer Seal and a mum-of-four, began her career after winning a beauty contest at the age of 18.

After moving to the U.S. in her early 20s, her career began slowly: ' I did a lot of catalogues in beginning and went to so many castings and tried tried, tried, for many years.'

Mother-of-four Heidi, seen with husband Seal, is now a successful supermodel

But her huge success at her very first Victoria's Secret runway show made her career.
'I loved all of it, doing Victoria's Secret, doing shows with all those models,' she said.

'It was Naomi Campbell, Tyra, Letitia Casta, Karen Mulder - you name it they all did it.

It was amazing to be surrounded by all these woman that I wanted to be.

'Then you get a title and get to be put in the New York Post and it was all happening.'
