Beyonce causes fan frenzy as she makes surprise appearance at University of Houston to support mother

Beyonce caused mayhem today after making a surprise appearance at the University of Houston where her mother was being honoured.

The 30-year-old singer joined Tina Knowles at the MD Anderson Library, where she featured at the university's Friends of Women's Studies Living Archives programme, which honours the achievements of local women.

Just minutes after word got out on Twitter that pregnant Beyonce had turned up, hundreds of eager fans rushed to get a glimpse and began chanting 'Beyonce, Beyonce'.

The racket briefly interrupted proceedings, according to the Houston Chronicle who had sent a reporter to the event.

Photographers captured a throng of teenagers piling up behind a glass door as word spread the superstar was in their midsts.

Tina was being honoured for her accomplishments as a mother, businesswoman and philanthropist.

The Texas native owns her own salon and now has a fashion line.
She has designed countless costumes for Beyonce and her daughter's former band Destiny's Child.

After the event, Beyonce greeted her fans who had been patiently lining up to see her.

She told the Chronicle: 'Wow, this is crazy how fast that happens - just one tweet.'
