'I just want to be myself': Kitty Brucknell sets the tone for the X Factor live shows as she steps out in bra top and bizarre skirt

By SARAH BULL

Unique: Kitty Brucknell set the tone for the X Factor live shows yesterday as she arrived at a press conference wearing a bejewelled bra top, bizarre sheet-style skirt and blue glittery shoe boots

She's already causing controversy and the live X Factor shows haven't even started yet.

Attending a press conference for the ITV show yesterday, Kitty showed off her incredible unique sense of style as she posed for photographers wearing a bejewelled bra top and bizarre sheet-style skirt, which had newspaper headlines drawn on in pen.

She teamed the look with a pair of blue glittery shoe boots and lashings of eye make-up.

Quirky: Misha Bryan and Janet Devlin are hotly tipped to go far in the competition thanks to their unique voices

And Kitty's stand-out look came as the 26-year-old singer revealed that while she doesn't care if people like her or not, she's determined to be herself.

She said: 'I don't ask that everyone likes me. I just want people who understand me to pick up the phone and vote for me.

'I think that's the most important thing. If I go out in the first round, at least I was myself.'

Underdogs: Amelia Lily and Sophie Habibis complete Kelly Rowland's girls category

Kitty's best friend Jennifer Belander also came forward today to insist that the pretty blonde is just 'misunderstood'.

She told new! magazine: 'I understand when people meet her that it’s hard to get through that exterior. She definitely works at an image. She’s actually sweet, vulnerable and fragile.'

Referring to the way Kitty has been portrayed on the programme, Jennifer added: 'It is very upsetting. It’s very easy to dismiss her because of the way she looks.
'She’s got the big blonde hair and the gorgeous body.'

Working it: Girl group Rhythmix looked coordinated but also unique as they posed for photographers

Ready to roll: Nu Vibe went for a casual look in jeans, chinos and plimsolls with T-shirts and jackets

Jennifer also revealed that Kitty had liposuction a 'few years ago' because she was feeling self-conscious about her figure.

She said: 'Kitty had liposuction to remove her “love handles”. She had it done a few years ago and didn’t tell me she was going to.

'She came back and was like, “Guess what?” It was one of those things that if it makes her more confident, I’m all for it.'

Babes in black: Essex girl duo 2 Shoes, made up of Lucy Texeira (left) and Charley Bird, who is expecting her first child, played it safe in all-black outfits

Meanwhile, former X Factor contestants Joe McElderry and Stacey Solomon also spoke about Kitty's chances on the show.

Joe, who won the contest in 2009, said he wishes Kitty would tone down her extreme approach, adding: 'She can sing, so she doesn't need to do all that attention-grabbing stuff. Just sing!'

And Stacey, who was runner-up on the programme behind Joe, added: 'She's like Katie Waissel and wants to be noticed. At least she's passionate, though!'

Stiff competition: Cheeky chappie Frankie Cocozza and Craig Colton are among Gary Barlow's four boys

Hoping for success: James Michael and Marcus Collins were also given a chance to prove themselves by Gary

Kitty joined the rest of the X Factor contestants at a press conference ahead of this weekend's live shows this weekend.

And it looks like she might have some competition in the fashion stakes from 19-year-old Misha Bryan, who wowed in a red top and tutu-style skirt.

Talking about Misha, Joe tipped her to win the show, adding: 'She's got such an amazing voice and is my absolute favourite. She can rap as well! I liked the fact she kept it secret until bootcamp and didn't make a big deal out of it.'

The overs: Sami Brookes, Johnny Robinson and Jonjo Kerr are in the same category as controversial Kitty

Stacey, meanwhile, is backing Amelia Lily, 16, to win the contest.

She said: 'She strikes the perfect balance, as she's got a powerful voice but it's also a bit different. She's also got a unique look and a great personality - the whole package.'

However, the boys are also a strong category and Stacey said in terms of his voice and personality, she loves 22-year-old Craig Colton.

She told heat magazine: 'He seems sweet and his voice is the opposite of now you'd think he'd sound. It's quite unusual, which is an advantage over the others.'

The X Factor live shows begin this weekend, with a show on Saturday on ITV1 at 7.30pm and Sunday at 8pm.
